Maker Faire ShenZhen

This weekend we attended the first ever Maker Faire in China and it was bursting with new ideas and friendly faces. We caught up with mentor Mitch Altman and it was a special treat since he won’t be at Maker Faires in the United States for a while.

His dream machine was a hit, relaxation is a hard thing for Chinese makers to grasp but they’re starting to get it after trying out Mitch’s prototype.

Another mentor and cute crusader, Aoki-Sensai, was also there with all of his friends. We lost our minds over the cuteness of the Coconatch.

image

These little Coconatches are just begging to be snuggled. When they’re squeezed they tweet and certain lights and movements let you know when people are trying to get in touch with you.

Maker Faire was sponsored by our homeboy Seeed Studio and they hooked us up with translators. Ours got bored with us because I already speak Chinese, but Bob was relieved to have help. In the picture above he is showing off his affordable portable scoreboard which will come out just in time for the Olympics.

Uh oh, this is what I’ll be getting in trouble for with our robot overlord censors of 2030. Here are their younger open-source cousins fighting each other and dancing for our pleasure. We must encrypt this post before they drain us of all of our human battery juice.

image

Actually, we don’t really have to worry. When the robot revolution comes they’ll enslave people like Ian from Dangerous Prototypes first. He and his crew spread some open-source cheer by showing off a small slice of their open-source projects’ pie.

Meanwhile, at our demo we had literal food. For our far east sous vide treat we made Onsen Eggs and put them in noodle soup. Before Maker Faire goers ate their food they got to play with it. We encouraged tasters to poke at their play-doh-like egg yolks.

Nothing to see here, O noble robot masters. We’re just making facehole objects for other humans using primitive Arduino technology. Please spare us.
