Hong Kong Weekend
Womp, womp. The next time we go into Hong Kong we’ll probably head over earlier. Last weekend we endured waiting behind a literal sea of people. Sometimes they just moved from side to side, creating a wave motion instead of moving forwards. While immobile in line, we got aggressively rough-handled by some transient grandmas, I think Abe still has bruises from their pinching.
Once we got in it was pretty thrilling and I did a happy dance. Pretty quickly, though, we were bombarded by sensations up to the point of numbness. You know, like when you grind down on a throbbing cavity until you can’t feel it anymore. Luckily, we got lunch right away.
We got a hearty plate of mantis shrimp. It was the first time any of us ate this crustacean, and it was by far the most we’ve ever paid for a meal in Asia! Oops, as the group’s fearless Chinese speaking leader I bowed my head in shame for taking my friends to a tourist trap. However, fried garlic with spring onions over the sweet meat of alien flesh is a beautiful thing.
With full bellies we feasted our eyes on what it would look like if corporations had sex on the beach.
We trekked for miles and miles on roads in the sky built for pedestrians over freeways. We walked from a far end of Hong Kong to the center. Along the way we passed by pubs that smelled comfortingly yeasty and a Ruth’s Chris Steak House. It was a long, hard hike filled with moments where we literally reeled back from looking up at the skyscrapers.
So, Hong Kong is not a walking city— it’s also not a city for outsiders. Spending one day with a local will take you further than exploring this place by yourself for a month.
But probably nobody in the world could tell us what this piece of Hong Kong public art means. Some evangelist revision of 9/11 inside of a pre-Y2K school computer?
Ahhhh, at the end of our journey we feasted at Crystal Jade inside of Hong Kong’s illustrious International Finance Center (IFC). We ran through a man-made forest and an Armani mall to get to our steamy rewards at dinner and as we sank into the seats and slurped— we thought to ourselves that it was a good day.
